Up to my neck in pillows

Due to lots of wet weather, my kitchen reno has come to a halt.  I need to paint the cabinet doors, but that must be done outside.  I’ve got a handy new paint sprayer that I’m super excited to use.  But aside from that, I’m drowning in pillows.  It’s all wonderful, but I’m so busy sewing.  I didn’t even get to start my roman shade yesterday.  Hopefully I can get caught up on my orders and crank out the shade over the weekend.  I’m still crossing my fingers for a semi-sunny day.

Fabric Organization

My fabric supply has gotten slightly out of control and I feel like I’ve been drowning in stacks upon stacks of fabric for months.  So it was time for a much needed organizing solution.

I picked up a bunch of these wooden pants hangers from Ikea.

They were $1.00 each.

I also added a hanging rod to my existing shelving unit.

Here it is all is hung up neatly in my craft closet.

Isn’t it beautiful!?  I just LOVE it!!

Now I know exactly where everything is when I need it.

My Bedroom Curtains

I was flipping through my latest issue of DIY magazine and I came to a page that stopped my in my tracks.  I was shocked to see this photo!

Hmmm…..does something look familiar?  Let me help you out.

Those are my bedroom curtains!

I’ve had a lot of people ask me where I got these and what fabric I used.  Here’s the secret…they are sheets!  I found these amazing sheets on clearance at Crate and Barrel.  It was love at first sight and I knew they would make perfect curtains.  I’ve got 3 windows in this room and I wanted 2 panels for each window.  That can quickly add up when making custom drapes.  Using these sheet sets was a much more affordable option for me.  I bought 3 sets and each came with one flat and one fitted twin sheet.  I hung the flat one’s just as they were and hemmed the bottom.  I cut the elastic out of the remaining 3 fitted sheets.  I had to do a little cutting and piecing together with these, but the pattern is busy enough that you can’t tell at all.

Sheets are not always a cheaper option, but often times they are.  A great money saver is to make 2 curtain panels out of a king size sheet.  Just cut in in half, hem the edges, and you’re good to go.

And since I’ve had these curtains hanging for a while, I’ll just pretend that DIY magazine copied my idea.  Hanging sheets as curtains is nothing new, but it’s so funny that they used the exact same ones.

How to Remove Stickers from Glass

Maybe you’ve encountered this situation before, but this was my first time trying to remove A LOT of stickers from my son’s bedroom window.  They have been there for quite some time, but I finally decided it was time to say goodbye.

Here are the 3 essentials you’ll need:

  1. Nail polish remover
  2. An old credit card
  3. Rubber gloves

Use a paper towel, to heavily apply the nail polish remover to the glass.  You really want to saturate it as much as possible (and yes, be sure to open a window as well!).  Be sure to wear rubber gloves so you don’t get it all over your hands.  Now it’s time to WAIT!  You need to wait about one or two minutes before you start scraping away.  It won’t work if you start right away.  Then use your credit card and carefully scrape those stickers away.  You still need to give it a little muscle, but you should be able to remove everything fairly easy.

I know there are products out there specifically for sticker removal, but I didn’t want to go out and buy anything.  This worked just fine for me.

It’s nice to have a clean window again!

Front Door Makeover

Here’s a look at what I did yesterday.

My front door has been in desperate need of a makeover for some time.  It was painted black when we moved in and it always looked dirty.  It just needed a few coats of some colorful paint.

I started by taping off the door knob, lock, and peep hole.

The wood was chipped off around the peep hole, so I used a little wood filler to patch it up.

This only took about 10 minutes to dry and then I sanded off the excess to make it nice and smooth.

Then it was time for primer.  With a black door, I knew primer was a must.  I used my favorite Kilz oil based primer.  It has such great coverage that you usually only need to apply one coat.

Here’s how it looks after I primed.  I used a foam brush to get into all the detailed parts and around the knob, and a foam roller on all the flat surfaces.

I had a lot of leftover paint from my kitchen island, so I used the same color on the door.  It’s Sherwin Williams “Drizzle.”  I love love love this color!  It’s also an oil based paint, which is a lot more durable than latex. I applied 2 coats.

Here it is all finished with my new star anise wreath.  I love the blue and brown color combo, and this wreath smells A-MAZING!

I think it’s the perfect punch of color that my porch needed.  It feels like a breath of fresh air.  I just adore colored doors!

Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday!  Thanks so much for stopping by!!

Roman Shade Complete

Alright, I’m back with pictures of the boys roman shade for you.  Better late than never, right!  I’m thrilled with how it turned out and it’s just perfect in this room.

The wainscoting in this room has take a serious beating, so my husband agreed to help me paint it this weekend.  Just a couple more small projects and this room will be done!

New Roman Shade

First of all, thanks so much for all the shout outs for my shop. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your support. You are all simply awesome!

Here are the latest lovely floral pillows I added to the mix.

Ok, now on to my next project. I’m been working this past month on finishing up the boys bedroom. It’s literally just a day away from being finished and I’m loving it SO much. I found the PERFECT fabric for the space and just knew it was the one. I was really wanting a blue and orange scheme and this fabric pulled all the pieces together. It’s fun, hip, playful, but not too childish.

So where is this fabric going you ask? On the windows, of course. You know I love patterned window treatments! I didn’t want to pay for a custom made shade from this fabric, so I used the existing shade and glued my fabric over the top. I know I always say this, but anyone can do this!

I pulled off some white ribbon trim that I glued on a few years ago so you can see where the glue left its mark.

I laid my fabric over the shade to measure the length. I tucked it under the folds before I cut it to make sure I didn’t cut it too short.

I used a combination of iron-on hem tape and Fabri-Tac to attach the fabric. I used the hem tape on the flat part and used the glue on the underside of the folds.

I left about a half inch of fabric around all the edges so I could wrap it around the back. When the front was secure, I flipped the shade over and attached the edges to the back with more Fabri-Tac.

The whole thing took me about 2 hours to complete. Because I used a geometric pattern, it took more time to make sure the fabric was lined up correctly and didn’t look crooked. If you used a solid or all over floral pattern, it would be much quicker.

Sorry to leave you hanging, but you’ll have to come back tomorrow to see it all finished and hung. You’ll also get to see the rest of the room!

Pillow Plush is Here!

So are you ready for my big announcement?  I just opened my new pillow shop on etsy called Pillow Plush!  This has been a dream of mine for a long time, and I’m so excited about this new venture.  I am just a little obsessed with fabric and now I get to combine my obsession with my love of sewing. Win win!

You can find my shop over on the sidebar.

There are a lot of pillow shops on etsy, so I wanted to make mine a little different.  First of all, I wanted it to be affordable.  My pillows are some of the lowest priced pillows you will find on etsy and all the fabric is very high quality.  Pillows are the easiest way to add color, pattern, and style to your home.

But here is the BEST PART OF ALL……….I am donating 5% of every purchase to a family in need this Christmas!!

So I need your help.  Pillows make an awesome Christmas gift and you’ll also be helping out a very needy family with your purchase.  I will keep you all updated on where the money will go so you can share the gift giving with me.  I would be so grateful if you spread the word on your blog, facebook, twitter, etc. so I can raise enough money for this family.  After Christmas I will continue to put 5% of each purchase into a fund for a new family for next Christmas.  I feel so grateful to be able to do something I love, so this is just a little way of giving back.

Here is a look at some of my favorite patterns from the shop.

I have many more patterns in the shop and I’m going to be adding a few more later today and also tomorrow.  Thanks for all your support!

A little Photo Finishing

My bedroom has been a work in progress for a long time, but I’m happy to say that it’s finally coming together.  I still have a few more projects to tackle before it’s all done.  Here is my latest photo project I did with my favorite Target frames and some extra wallpaper.

I printed out a few of my favorite wedding photos in black and white.

Then I placed the matte face down on my wallpaper and traced it with a pencil.

Time to cut it all out.

Once I had my paper cut out, I used double stick tape to secure it over the top of the matte.

Here is one all finished.

And here are all of them in my bedroom.  They are perfect above the bed.

A few close-ups…

I printed my own photos and already had the frames and the paper, so this was a free project.  You could easily do this with any decorative paper or fabric to jazz up some plain frames.  I love yellow and blue together–they just sing to me.

Upholstered Backboard

I love benches in a dining room!  They offer more seating than chairs do and give some casualness to the room.  I’m not a huge formal dining room person, but I love a good mix of formal and casual pieces to create a cozy space that’s livable.  I knew I wanted a bench for my dining room, but I wanted it to be a place that was comfortable where people would want to linger.  A backboard provides loads of comfort and gave me an opportunity to add some pattern and color.

It’s SO easy to make this.  The steps are the same as my reupholstered piano bench and my headboard.

Here is what you need:

  • Wood
  • Foam (1-2 inches thick)
  • Batting
  • Fabric
  • Staple Gun
  • D-Ring Picture Hooks

Start with a piece of wood, cut to size at the hardware store.  You don’t need fancy wood because you’re going to cover it up.

Cut your foam the same size as your wood piece.

Time to layer all the pieces.  Lay your fabric face down, then the batting, foam, and wood in that order.  Make sure to cut the fabric and batting 4-5 inches longer than the wood on all sides.

Use a staple gun to secure the fabric to the back, pulling tightly as you go.  Start in the middle on one long side and work your way out to the edge.

Here is a guide I made to give you a better sense of the correct stapling order.

Budget Wise Home

The final step is to screw 2 D-ring picture hooks into the back on each end.

Attach nails or screws into wall studs or with drywall anchors and hang your board from the hooks.

I always tell people how easy this was to make and I don’t think they believe me.  I’m telling you that ANYONE can do this!
