So do you remember the design board I created for my son’s bedroom? Here is a refresher for you.
Well, turns out my oldest son totally vetoes it. What?! My sons who are three and six share this bedroom and my six year old has quite a sense of his own style—already. He is not into the orange headboard, in fact, he’s been begging me to paint it light blue for over a year now. I keep telling him that the walls are light blue, so we need to choose a different color, but he is not easily swayed. I also keep trying to convince him that orange is so awesome, but he’s not buying it. I don’t think he’s really opposed to orange, it’s just that he really wants the headboards to be blue.
So lately I’ve been thinking about kids and their own sense of style and personality. Wait—I have three boys! Boys aren’t supposed to care about this kind of stuff, right?! That’s what I would have thought. But both my three and six year old have proved me wrong from a very early age. It all started with their clothes. They totally have a preference on what they wear every day, and are extremely defiant if I recommend they wear something else. My oldest had a favorite striped sweater that he wanted to wear EVERY day when he was 2. Last year there was a “car shirt” with no sleeves that he wanted to wear while it was snowing outside. There were many tears shed when I told him no on that one.
Now my three year old is the same way. I always try to convince him to wear his cute shirts, but every day he refuses and wants to wear something else. I think he cycles through about 5-6 shirts even though there are probably 20 + hanging in the closet. And there is a certain pair of shorts (the cutest one’s!) that he refuses to wear. I still have no idea why.
So I let my kids have their own sense of style and even though they are often times mismatched and wearing something I do not like, they are happy and expressing who they are. It’s so much fun to see their personality develop.
As for the blue headboards, I’m not sure which route to take yet. I know that I can see the big picture with his bedroom and he doesn’t even care if it all “looks good” or not. I think I will come up with a few options that I’m happy with and have him choose between those.
Are your kids like mine? I would love to know—especially those with cute little boys.
