DIY Curtain Rod

Budget Tip of the Day: Wooden Dowel Rod

To round out this week of hardware store decor, I’m going to show you a super easy and cheap idea for a curtain rod.  Anyone can do this and it will only cost you about $6.00 total per rod.  No one will know you didn’t buy it ready made.  Here is what you’ll need.

Here is a close up.

This is the best solution for small window as well.  I have a bay window and it’s very hard to find curtain rods to fit.  I decided to just hang two panels on the end of the smaller side windows.  I searched everywhere for a curtain rod that was shorter than 17 inches–no luck!  So I made my own.

I haven’t gotten around to painting these ones yet, but they work just perfectly in this window.

Each bracket was about $3.00 and the dowels were $1.00 each.  I bought the wood finial balls at the craft store  for $2.00 and used epoxy to glue them on the ends.  I used one dowel for the window in the first picture above and cut the other dowel in half to fit the two smaller windows.  Measure your window before you go to the store and they will cut the dowels to size for you.

The grand total was $22.00 for three curtain rods.  Talk about a money saver!

Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday.

im having problems finding dowel rods longer than 48inches and my windows are 60inches! are there any other options? i love this idea!

    Ashley,

you could probably do two dowels to meet your 60 inches. Either link them together in a center support bracket or you could do two support brackets towards the ends leaving the exposed longer middle part the full dowel length. I am guessing your panels would hide the outermost supports if you went that route. would that work? does that make sense? i just made some bay window rods out of pvc pipe and i had to use a center support. amy

Where did you get the brackets and the dowels from? Home Depot? Thanks for the tip. I can’t wait to try this.
