Summer is my favorite time to cook because there are so many fresh herbs readily available. If you’ve bought them pre-packaged at the grocery store before, you know how expensive they are. I don’t have a garden, but I started planting my own herbs last year using what I already had. It was a big success. I LOVED being able to just grab any herb in a second and throw it into my meals.
So here is an easy tutorial for how to make your own mini herb garden using all the vases you already have that might be collecting dust in your cupboards. If you don’t have any, don’t buy them new! There are tons of vases at thrift stores and they only cost between one and two dollars a piece.
Needed Supplies:
- Vases (one for each herb)
- Herbs
- Bag of accent stones or gems (available at the dollar store)
- Potting Soil
I’m so glad I saved them and can now put them to good use.
I got these stones at the dollar store for yep, $1.00!
Fill the bottom with the stones, about one fourth full. If you put too many stones in, the roots of the herbs run out of room to grow and will start dying in a month. This happened to one of mine last year.
Dump in your potting soil and then place each herb inside. I used oregano, rosemary, Italian parsley, and thyme. These one’s were a little too wide for my vases, so I had to break some off and then kind of stuff what was leftover inside. It took a little trial and error to get the right amount of soil in to make it work. If you add too much or too little, just gently pull the herb out and replant. Some dirt will also fall in between the stones, but when they are finished it doesn’t look that bad.
I also planted basil and cliantro, but I used 2 larger pots for those. I use a lot of those 2 herbs, so I got 3 of each and planted them all together in a big pot. I’ll share that post next week. These vases work well for herbs that you don’t always need a lot of at one time.
Here they are on my windowsill. They make me smile every time I see them and make my kitchen smell absolutely fabulous!!
Rosemary anyone? That’s my favorite!
Have a great weekend everyone. I am doing another week of dollar store decor for the budget tips next week. I found so many great things, and there just weren’t enough days this week to share them all. I’m so excited!
Stay tuned.
