Budget Tip of the Day: Stenciled Canvas

It’s very easy to become an artist and create a beautiful masterpiece when decorating with stencils.  All you need is a stencil, some craft paint, and a canvas. Pick up a stretched canvas at any craft store. They usually cost just a few dollars and come in a variety of sizes. Secure your stencil on the canvas using repositionable spray glue or stencil adhesive. Apply your paint with a foam brush using dabbing motions. Let dry and apply a second coat. Let dry completely and carefully peel the stencil off. If you don’t want a white background, just paint the canvas another color first and then proceed with painting your stencil. There’s no longer an excuse for empty walls with this easy and affordable solution.

Stenciled Headboard

Budget Tip of the Day: Stenciled Headboard

Take decorating with stencils to a whole new level with this project.  All beds look better with a headboard, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money to get one. It’s easy to create a beautiful, show-stopping headboard for just a few dollars with a stencil and some paint. Measure and mark the desired width of your headboard and then apply painter’s tape around the outside of the marked lines. Paint your background color and let that dry completely before adding your stencil. Use the same technique as explained in yesterday’s stenciled dresser tip to adhere and paint your stencil over the base color. For bigger impact, use a contrasting color to give it more pop and presence. Your unique headboard is sure to become the focal point in your bedroom and is certainly something you won’t find at any store.

Stenciled Dresser

Budget Tip of the Day: Stenciled Dresser

If you want a simple and affordable way to transform a plain dresser, then decorating with stencils is the way to go. Just find a stencil you love or make your own by tracing a design onto contact paper and cutting it out using an exacto knife. Just peel and stick the contact paper right to the dresser. If using a different stencil, securely tape it in place or use repositionable spray adhesive to adhere. Apply your paint over the stencil and then carefully remove. Repeat the pattern around the dresser as desired. Stenciling will give you a brand new look without spending a lot of time and money. From geometric to contemporary to floral patterns, the variety of stencils is endless. You’re sure to find (or make) one that suits your taste and style.

Budget Tip of the Day:  Stenciled Names

Home decorating with stencils can be lots of fun and is an affordable way to add some unique touches to your space.  Simple letter stencils can be used for much more than just crafts. Incorporate them into your decor by painting them right on the wall. Try painting the names of each family member above or beside a storage compartment to create instant organization and a designated spot for everyone’s belongings. All you need is a small bottle of inexpensive craft paint. Secure the stencils on the wall with tape and then use a foam paint brush to apply the paint in a dabbing motion. This idea is perfect for an entryway, kitchen, or shared kid’s space where everyone’s stuff can easily turn into clutter and get mixed up. Have fun using different sized letters and different colors of paint.
