Decorating With Pink: Paint

Budget Tip of the Day: Pink Paint

If you think using pink paint is reserved for kids rooms only, think again. It’s all about picking the right shade. Pink can look very peaceful and romantic–perfect for a master bedroom.

Here is a tip when trying to choose a pink paint color. Find one you like and then choose something at least 2 shades lighter than the swatch. You may like a color in a small dose, but once that swatch is blown up and put all over the walls, it will look much brighter and overwhelmingly pink. Choose a pink that almost looks white on the swatch. You’ll end up with a soft, pale pink that looks very grown up and sophisticated.

I love the pink walls paired with the beautiful wood tones of the furniture.  The vintage frames give the room a collected, cozy feel while the ottoman gives a fun shot of brighter pink that adds some modern flair.  Very romantic looking, I think.

Designing to Sell

Designing to SellBudget Tip of the Day: Paint Paint Paint!

Paint is the best way to get the most impact for the least amount of money. The color of a room is so important when you’re designing to sell your home. Color can instantly set the mood in a room and brings warmth and life to every space. White walls are very uninviting, and bright colors will send potential buyers running. There’s nothing wrong with wanting bold colors in your home.  You just need to realize that not everyone has your same taste.  Stick to neutral and muted colors when choosing your paint. Anything in the brown family is a safe bet. Blues and greens can also work well as long as you pick a soft, muted tone. If you do nothing else to get your home ready to sell, at least paint the walls. It will make a huge difference in how someone feels the second they step foot in your home. Don’t underestimate the power of paint! It’s a beautiful thing.

Eco-Friendly Decorating

Eco Friendly DecoratingBudget Tip of the Day: Paint, Candles, & Plants

If you’re worried about toxins in your home and in the air, there are a few easy eco-friendly decorating things you can do.
First, choose paint without VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which can emit toxic gases. Most paint stores have low or no VOC options. The other great thing about paint is that it can make the most dramatic impact in your home for the least amount of money.
Second, if you love the atmosphere that candles create, choose natural soy candles instead. Traditional candles are made from petroleum-based paraffin, which emits a variety of toxins. Soy candles do not. The Fragrance Collection by Glade has affordable soy candles that you can find in almost any store.  They are a great eco- friendly decorating option.

Finally, another great way to eliminate toxins and purify the air in your home is by adding potted plants. Fill up a window sill or table with plants and they will absorb most of the average home’s airborne toxins within 24 hours. Not bad for something you might already have. Keep in mind that one plant won’t do the trick. You need a bunch to achieve these benefits.

Budget Tip of the Day: Use Paint

There is no need to hang anything on your walls if you go bold with your paint. DIY artwork doesn’t get much easier than this.  Create a pattern of painted squares on your wall, or let a single square stand on it’s own. Use painter’s tape and a level to achieve an even square pattern. You can get quite creative using different colors, sizes and arrangements. If you want a variety of colors, but don’t want to fork out the money for that much paint, use paint samples. They are usually only two to five dollars per sample and come with more than enough paint for this project. Most of them come in a flat finish, but if you want something a bit more shiny, gently rub some wipe-on poly (available at any home improvement store) over each square before removing your tape.

Budget Tip of the Day: Paint!

There’s really no limit to the fun you can have with a nursery and it’s easy to incorporate many budget nursery ideas into the mix. Throw all the rules out that you’ve got for the rest of your house and use paint to create a fun nursery that both you and baby will love. Paint is the most inexpensive way to make the biggest impact in any room. Stripes always work well for a nursery and give it a whimsical look. To paint stripes as shown in the picture, first paint the entire wall the lighter of the two colors. When the paint is completely dry, measure and tape off the stripes using a level to make sure they are straight. Paint the stripes with the darker color and peel off the tape before it is completely dry. If you’ve never painted stripes before, you will find that it can take quite a bit of time and work. But it really does make a big impact for not a lot of money. Enlist a friend to help you out and cut your time in half.
